The reason for creating this new benchmarking tool

Patient groups and other health NGOs are expanding rapidly, and have never been so popular as they are today. Their growth is fuelled by the damage inflicted upon mainstream national healthcare systems from tough new doses of fiscal austerity, and by ever-increasing patient demand for services. Patients frustrated at declining levels of healthcare provision are readily turning to the charity sector for help and advice. Patient groups are also prospering from the advent of social media, which enables them to reach out to thousands (and, sometimes, even to millions) of patients at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods of communication. Yet, despite the obvious importance of the patient movement, no real mechanism exists to measure the movement’s impact upon national healthcare systems—hence the development of this new benchmarking tool.

 How this benchmarking study of patient groups was undertaken

PatientView conducted three surveys in May 2012, asking 1,000 patient groups from around the world, 20 senior healthcare professionals and 30 health industry executives to measure the impact of patient groups on health policy and healthcare systems. 

The eight Indicators used to assess patient group impact upon healthcare systems

1. Business acumen   

2. Communication (via social media) 

3. Range of services provided 

4. Scale of networking with stakeholders

5. Scale of networking with peer organisations 

6. Reputation 

7. Impact on national health policy, and   

8. Perceived hurdles

 Each of the eight Indicators is defined by various factors. For example, business acumen comprises having: a mission/vision statement; a formal structure of governance; regular consultation with patients; a sustainable form of financing; an operating/business plan; and independence from funders.

 Patient groups in the following 10 countries/regions were assessed for their effectiveness by the new benchmarking tool:

· Australasia

· Canada

· Central and South America

· Eastern Europe

· France

· Germany

· Italy

· Spain

· UK
